3 Tips to Create a Peaceful Backyard

In stressful times, it’s important to have peaceful and constructive ways to manage your life.

Great minds have often contemplated the restorative and healing powers of nature. The esteemed John Muir, who was pivotal in securing the National Parks Foundation alongside Theodore Roosevelt, often was amazed by nature’s beauty. He once said, “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity.”

While Muir often spoke of the mountains out west, we can heed some of his insights. Nature is quite literally in our backyards, and we can find this wildness right outside our doors.

Here are our 3 bits of advice for creating a peaceful backyard.

1. Clear Clutter

Clutter creates a whole gamut of issues, according to psychologists. This information may be disheartening for perpetually messy people to hear, but the benefits of clearing backyard clutter can profoundly create feelings of inner peace. According to Psychology Today, clutter causes feelings of stress; it signals to our brain that our work is not completed and creates feelings of anxiety and being overwhelmed – whether we’re able to pinpoint that or not.

Start by raking leaves, clearing away old toys, debris, etc. and allow yourself space to relax.

2. Invest in Comfortable Furniture

Pieces like the Cove Sofa Set allow you a place to sit comfortably and lounge.

The world is stressful, and your home should be a place of refuge from the outside. You don’t have to travel to a park to enjoy sunshine and flowers in comfort. And when you have a comfortable sofa set outside, you won’t even really want to.

Choose a color that calms you, add some relaxing accessories like a decorative pillow, and enjoy nature’s beauty in your own backyard.

3. Create Shade

Imagine when you’re at your favorite resort or swim park, the feeling of an oversized umbrella conjures up feelings of escape, of indulgence and relaxation. Oversized umbrellas can also add to an overall cohesiveness of your backyard by coordinating with fabric patterns creating a very satisfying overall visual. The shade is as necessary as sunlight; it creates a haven from the sun’s heat and protects your skin against UV light.

Wait, There’s More:

Of course, just having the furniture and shade is one layer to peacefully enjoying your backyard, deciding furniture and tending to your garden will also help alleviate stress. During these strange times of quarantine and social distancing, find refuge and solace in the beauty of spring.

Stay safe.
